How to Describe a Feeling?

“A PAINTING WORKS best for me.” Such a simple answer personifies Linda Carter Holman, a self-taught painter with a fresh, unique style. What makes it unique? Her use of brilliant color. A distinct, rhythmical quality in her compositions. The understated storytelling. And an honesty—a purity of heart—that is not easily found in paintings these days.

We could say more, but she does it best in her exuberant paintings and unadorned words (from her book).

I see life in a simple way, an uncomplicated way. I love color and form. I crave it.

I rejoice in the painting and am refreshed.

I have had the feeling that the paintings have a life of their own. Their stories seem to reveal themselves to me on my canvas. As they choose, in their own time.

Sometimes a sketch waits for years to become a painting. Sometimes it never does.

Not all paintings come easy. Not then or now. But I have never had the thought to give up.

I didn’t sit down with the idea that I would teach myself to paint. I just sat down to paint and I did.

Painting has been my balance cane on the high wire of life. It keeps me sane.
