William Hendricks Tenements
83–85 Church Street • 1749–1751
This pair of buildings shares an open passage that leads to the entrances to the dwellings above. On the street side are the original shop fronts. (Notice also the difference between the two doors: the one at No. 83 is more narrow, has a different transom window above it, and is not inset like the one at No. 85.)
The thru passage has windows and a door near the back for stairs in the back rooms. There was no central hall, and the plan was asymmetrical.
On the left side of the building there are scars in the brickwork from another building that had been constructed next to it, and there are no windows on that wall.
The north side originally had no windows, but one small one has been added.
This is a pair of row houses even though as a pair it is not part of a row. •
