A Flair for the Flute

AlmaViva Ensemble

FLUTIST MONICA TARAGANO hails from Argentina, lives in Paris, and performs around the world both as a soloist and with the ensemble she co-founded, AlmaViva.

At its core, AlmaViva is a unique piano, guitar, and flute trio with impassioned musicianship and impeccable style. They compel you to listen and to keep listening, which you can’t say about all musicians, even well trained ones.

AlmaViva plays the classical repertoire yet has a penchant—and special feel—for Classical Latin-American pieces (witness the second video below).

When I was in Paris a few months ago, I had a chance to interview Monica and ask her about all things artistic: how she approaches new pieces, what she does to prepare for going on stage, what effect the composer and audience have on her, how learning music affects children, and why the arts are so vital in our lives. This is a rare, behind-the-scenes glimpse at the inner life of a professional musician who was willing to share her insight (and who I hope we will see at Spoleto or Piccolo Spoleto in the future).

A THING OF BEAUTY, being an expression of harmony, possesses of its own nature a harmonizing power which, placing us temporarily in a state of perfect balance, allows us to be in tune with Reality.
