WHAT MAKES OPERA so powerful, so inspiring? And what is so unique about the art of conducting opera versus orchestral music?

There are a lot of answers to these questions, but a great place to start is with some of the world’s leading opera conductors who in this interview share their knowledge of, insight into, and musical passion for opera.

They are (pictured left to right) Antonio Pappano of the Royal Opera House in London, Simon Rattle of the Berlin Philharmonic, and Valery Gergiev of the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, Russia.

You might also look for the BBC series entitled Opera Italia which Antonio Pappano hosted in 2010 and 2011. It will open your eyes to, or at the least renew your interest in, the seemingly fathomless world of opera.
